Rural parents deserve access to care

Our Why

Maternal and infant health care remains challenging for many, especially in rural areas where hospital closures, limited access to maternity care, and transportation barriers make obtaining care difficult. Recognizing these challenges, Altruism, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2021, opened The MaIH Center in rural West Central Missouri to provide targeted health and social care services through a team of doulas, community health workers, and midwives.

However, the need for comprehensive maternal and infant health support isn’t confined to rural areas. Missouri ranks 44th in the nation for maternal health outcomes, with more than 70% of maternal deaths deemed preventable. In response, Altruism, Inc. has partnered with Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center to open a second MaIH Center in Kansas City’s urban core. This collaboration aims to provide wraparound care to women and birthing people who might not otherwise have access to such services.

By integrating services within Sam Rodgers’ existing infrastructure, the partnership ensures that clients have access to a continuum of care, including obstetric services, pediatrics, WIC, dental care, and behavioral health support, all under one roof. This model addresses both medical and social determinants of health, aiming to improve outcomes for mothers and infants across diverse communities.

With support from our philanthropic partners and healthcare collaborators, all services are provided at no cost to individuals who are uninsured or covered through Medicaid.

Our services are also available to Spanish-speaking clients. To learn more about Altruism, Inc. and The MaIH Center, call Lexington at 660.259.2402 or Kansas City at 816.889.4897.
